On the northern coast of Indonesia, located near the city of Semarang, the Kalikuto Bridge connects two districts namely Batang and Kendal as part of the TransJava National roads Project.
The Kalikuto bridge is designed as an “arch bridge” with a steel main span of 100 meters-long supported by 2 planes of 18 hangers with a vertical angle up to 20°.
The particularity of the construction method was that Kalikuto Bridge is the first bridge in Indonesia whose structure is assembled at the installation site. Indeed, the steel arch is composed of several steel boxes and they have been assembled on site vertically. Theses boxes were hold by strands and the two half-arches have been rotated and lowering down using strand jacks. The general contractor Waskita Karya conducted works and PT. Waagner Biro Indonesia achieved the bridge design.
The scope of Freyssinet works was the following:
- Rental of strand jacks and Technical assistance for the lowering of the both half-arches
- Supply and Installation of the 36 hangers
This bridge is a part of the Government’s highway roads TransJava project which aims to improve mobility from west to east side of the Java island. Painted at the colors of the Indonesian flagship, the bridge opened in December 2018 and was warmly welcomed by the local population.
