Incremental launching of two viaducts on A16 Rotterdam

Two viaducts for two teams. Indeed, our teams from Freyssinet Polska and Freyssinet Zuidwest are combining their expertise on this major construction site, which is part of a new highway between the A16 at Terbregseplein and the A13 at The Hague airport.

What is the main challenge?

The main challenge is to launch two parallel prestressed concrete viaducts, each over 400m long, over one of the busiest traffic interchanges in The Netherlands, while maintaining traffic flow.

What is the Incremental Launching Method (ILM)?

With this in-situ construction technique, each bridge segment is match-cast against the previous one and prestressed to the section of the deck already built. This is the first time ever the Incremental Launching Method has been used in the Netherlands.

What stage is the project at?

  • Last week, we launched segment 13 of the first deck (of a total of 17 segments).
  • All temporary support structures are in place and we are currently working on the installation of the spherical bearings and the post-tensioning.
  • In early 2023, we will start demobilization on the first viaduct and mobilize to start ILM on the second viaduct.

Construction progress is on schedule and the client is very satisfied. Stay tuned!
